  2. This file is README.1ST.  It contains information about
  3. WinChime and how to install it.  Please read this file
  4. first!
  5.  
  6. WinChime is a wind chime sound program for Windows 3.1,
  7. which uses the MIDI capabilities of your sound card.
  8.  
  9. WinChime is shareware, which means try-before-you-buy.
  10. It is not free.  If you like the program, be sure to 
  11. read the on-line help information about REGISTRATION 
  12. after installing this fully working demo.

  15. I.  Distribution Files
  16. ------------------------

  18. You may have received WinChime in one of two forms:
  19.  
  20. A) You have the unregistered shareware version in the
  21.    form of .ZIP file WCHIME11.ZIP from a bulletin board,
  22.    Internet, CDROM, etc.  You should know how to unzip
  23.    the file with PKUNZIP.EXE.
  24.  
  25. B) You have a floppy disk with several files, most in
  26.    compressed format.
  27.  
  28. If you have (A), please make sure the ZIP files are unzipped
  29. in a single directory before installation.

  31. II.  Installing WinChime
  32. ---------------------------

  34. The WinChime file set includes a program named SETUP.EXE
  35. used for installation.
  36.  
  37. If your distibution files are on a floppy disk in drive A:
  38.  
  39.     1) Go to Windows Program Manager.
  40.  
  41.     2) Click on the "Run..." item in "File" menu.
  42.  
  43.     3) In the command box type
  44.  
  45.         A:\SETUP
  46.  
  47.         (If your floppy drive is different than A:,
  48.          substitute the appropriate name.)
  49.  
  50.     4) Click on OK

  53. (If you unzipped the zipped file into a temporary directory, for
  54.  instance, C:\TMP, then do the same but with the command
  55.  C:\TMP\SETUP )
  56.  
  57. The setup program will ask you where you want WinChime installed.
  58. You may install it anywhere, but we suggest using a separate new
  59. directory to keep WinChime files separate from other programs.
  60.  
  61. WinChime's setup program gives you the option of installing BWCC.DLL,
  62. with the default being to install.  BWCC.DLL is a file that is
  63. necessary for WinChime to operate, and may already be on your computer
  64. because other programs use it.  A few users might have a specific
  65. good reason for not installing BWCC (like having a foreign-language
  66. version of this file) so the installation of this file can be de-selected,
  67. but most users will want the default installation.

  70. III. Getting started
  71. ----------------------

  73. Chances are your system is already set up correctly for MIDI
  74. if you have a sound card installed.  After installing, go
  75. ahead and try out WinChime by clicking on the Play button.
  76. If it sounds right, and the instrument setting matches what
  77. you hear, you're all set!  Otherwise, refer to the procedure
  78. detailed in WinChime's online-help under "Getting Started".

  81. Getting Started***

  83. Your Windows-compatible sound card has several ways of making
  84. music, including a MIDI synthesizer.  WinChime uses MIDI, because
  85. it runs well in the background without using significant CPU time
  86. or disk space.
  87.  
  88. You need to make sure the MIDI settings are correct for WinChime.
  89. In Windows 3.1:
  90.  
  91.     1) Go into Control Panel (usually in the Main program group in
  92.        Program Manager) and double click on MIDI Mapper .
  93.  
  94.     2) Under "Show", make sure the "Setups" radio button is selected.
  95.  
  96.     3) The "Name" list box should be "FM Synth (Base)" or 
  97.        "FM Synth (Extended)".   (Some newer sound cards may have
  98.        different selections besides "FM Synth", but the key words
  99.        here are "Base" and "Extended".

  101.     4) Click on the "Close" button to save your selections.
  102.  
  103. While you are in Control Panel, click on "Drivers".  Under "Installed
  104. Drivers", be certain that Midi Mapper is listed.  If not, install it.

  107. Sometimes, rarely, WinChime will not display properly on a computer
  108. because of an out-of-date BWCC.DLL file on your hard disk.
  109. Assuming C: is your hard drive, type 
  110.     C:\DIR/S BWCC.DLL 
  111. in a dos shell to and check file dates for out-of-date versions of this file.
